Update 11/4/2011: A University-wide site licence for Wimba Create was purchased using the Learning and Teaching Enhancement Fund for AY 2009/10 and 2010/11. Please note that the licence expires on 30/06/2011 and Information Services will NOT renew the licence for next academic year

See our report on the project - an extract from the conclusion follows below:

In all, the project served its purpose in raising awareness of the value of a learning objects approach to teaching and providing formative feedback to students. It has encouraged staff to think of ways to enrich their teaching by putting interactive material online. The most important thing is the pedagogy and its impact on student learning. Staff can apply the same pedagogy to other tools, including AberLearn Blackboard itself, to accomplish similar aims. We believe that, even after the software licence expires, this project will continue to have an impact in the form of changed academic practice.

Wimba Create is an extension for Word that can be used to create a set of web pages, including navigation and interactive elements, from a single Word document. No knowledge of HTML or web authoring software is needed to create the web pages. Wimba Create allows you to easily embed formative assessment such as a variety of quiz types, as well as links, images, video clips, Flash objects and more into the web pages.

One term often used to describe such a set of materials is a ‘learning object’. A learning object can be used as a stand-alone item or embedded into a module. Wimba Create allows you to export the learning object in a number of formats designed for different delivery methods. If it is exported as a Blackboard package, you can then upload it onto your AberLearn Blackboard module area as a single zipped file. When students click on the link, the entire package opens within AberLearn Blackboard so that students can navigate through the material freely.
