flipcam1a.jpg There has been a great deal of interest in the use of small, inexpensive digital video camcorders by both tutors and students. A Flip High Definition Digital Camcorder is now available through IS Media Loan Stock, and several departments are in the process of acquiring Flip cameras for use in specific projects.

In order to support this surge of interest in digital media, the E-learning Team is in the process of creating a new training course and good practice guide.

The first item to be available is a short quickstart guide to using the FlipShare software with the HD Flip camera. You may download the document in either of two formats:

If you or your students are using digital media - whether audio, video or still image - that feature someone as a subject, you should acquire that person's permission before making the media visible to others.  Please use the Data Authorisation Form below for getting permission from your subjects:

Please also see our bookmarks in Delicious for video, media, and the Flip camera.

One of the most useful external sites is JISC Digital Media. We encourage you to explore their good practice guides for effective recording of lectures and interviews, as well as general good practice and technical how-to in capturing moving images, still images, and audio.

You can borrow the Flip camera from Information Services Media & Sales, and also request material put onto the streaming server. More informaiton is found on the Media & Sales page.

Flipping Over Digital Media, 7 December 2010

On 7 December 2010, Mary Jacob presented a training session for AU staff about digital media. During the session, we brainstormed ideas for using digital media in teaching - this can include videos created by tutors or by students, as well as pre-existing materials found by either tutors or students. There is scope for a wide range of approaches including student- and teacher-centred learning, active learning, multi-modal learning.

During the session, participants had the opportunity to make a sample video clip using the Flip digital camcorder. See the results of their first attempt at digital video on this page!

Please see the presentation and the handout.

'Flip-ping Roles' workshop delivered at Gregynog Colloquium, 10 June 2010

On 10 June 2010, Kate Wright and Mary Jacob presented a workshop at the Gregynog Colloquium on the use of digital video in teaching, particularly using the Flip camera. During the workshop, participants created their own short video clips.

Here is a description of our group activity:

Group activity – 20 minutes

  • Find a place for your group to work.
  • Choose one of the four questions:
    • How would you use Flip cams in your own work?
    • How could your lecturers use flip cams in their teaching?
    • What is the most important issue for technology-enhanced learning?
    • What is the most exciting emerging technology (apart from digital video)?
  • Plan and create a short video clip to answer the question. About 5 minutes is a good length.
  • Return to the seminar room to share your experiences.

Use of Video for Language Classes

Mary Jacob has put together a list of free resources that provide digital materials for teaching. This documentation was originally put together for a workshop about video activities in Modern Foreign Languages, but would be helpful to anyone interested in using video materials.
