JISC Building Capacity Outputs

Back to JISC Building Capacity

We have a total of five Workpackages, each with at least one deliverable. All have now been completed and the final report submitted to JISC.

Workpackages 4 and 5 - Project Deliverables and Evaluation

The final report submitted to JISC on 3/3/2011 includes:

  • Consolidated case study report
  • Senior Management testimonials
  • Evaluation from the project consultant, Paul Bacsich, Matic Media and Sero Consulting
  • All outputs from workpackages 1-3, included in the appendix.

Workpackage 3 - Building In-person Support Channels

This workpackage focussed on building face-to-face support among academic staff - a 'Physical Information Commons' - enabling them to use technology-enhanced learning effectively. The cornerstone of this part of the project was the good practice showcase event on 6 December, 2010. In that event, we provided several different types of things that could be of use to staff, and then held a focus group to collect their suggestions.

Please see the attached case study for details.

Workpackage 2 - Scoping Online Support Tools

This workpackage focussed on expansion of Nexus in order to scope online support tools as a 'Virtual Information Commons'. This included the incorporation of the literature search from workpackage 1 into Nexus as well as expansion of case studies and resources on Nexus.

Please see the attached case study for details.

Workpackage 1 - Review of Projects

  • Institutional Objectives - The first task was to create an outline of specific institutional objectives that we aim to address with the Building Capacity project. We have identified six areas, which we used to categorise the materials found in the literature search. Please see the report below:

  • Mapping Services onto Objectives - We initially compiled all of the resources that we found in the literature search into a spreadsheet and tagged them with codes according to the institutional objectives that they addressed. In some cases, a single resource was valuable for more than one objective, so we allowed up to two tags per item. We then created a separate resource sheet for each objective. Please click the links below to open either the updated page or the original .pdf for the relevant list:
    • DL - distance learning (page link | original .pdf) and e-learning focussing on community building and interaction - This area was vibrant with many resources
    • EA - e-assessment (page link | original .pdf), feedback, e-submission - This area also yielded rich materials
    • FE - FE collaboration with HE (page link | original .pdf) - In our search focussing on JISC and HEA materials, we  found a few items publicly available for this area
    • LS - learning spaces (page link | original .pdf), learning styles, learning environments - There is a lot of information about these topics, but we must consider economic constraints when identifying useful models
    • TT - timetabling learning spaces (page link | original .pdf) flexibly - This topic is quite specific, so we didn't expect to find a large number of resources, but the ones we found were useful
    • WP - widening participation (page link | original .pdf) including digital skills and information skills - There was some very useful information here
    • There are some other resources that we often recommend to staff but do not match the six foci identified for Building Capacity. They are listed below:
