Clearing the muddiest point: podcasts as interactive feedback

Dr. Steve Greer used a teaching assessment technique developed by Frederick Mosteller of Harvard University called "the muddiest point". It is used to assess what students are having trouble understanding and provides the lecturer with feedback on items that are confusing.
Using this information, Steve was able to create a short podcast (3 minutes) for the students. This was designed to respond to all the "muddiest point" queries and was short enough that students could listen to it on the way to the lecture
This also had the advantage that Steve was able to analyse his teaching. For example, from the first session (shown on slide 8 above) Steve's reflections were:
- Possibly too much covered in the first session
- Any queries that would not be directly addressed in following sessions could be answered in the podcast
- Different students were responding to the exercise in different ways.
Student feedback about the podcasts was very positive, as shown on slide 13 ("Most positive aspect of module").
In future, Steve plans to produce more regular podcasts to build a following, improve the data capture from lectures and try to increase the number of students giving feedback.
