Capturing Handwriting and Audio

Even with all the various technologies available, sometimes its easier to explain something using pen and paper and to talk it through. That's fine if you only need to explain it to one person, but what happens when you have to explain the same thing to 200 other people?

The Livescribe Pulse Pen gives an opportunity to make a digital handwritten document with embedded audio. This file can be emailed out, uploaded into AberLearn Blackboard or made available on a website. Its been used by Dr I-Chant Chiang in Psychology to explain statistical methods to students.

A basic example is available to look at - you need Adobe Acrobat Reader X to view it correctly (Acrobat X is available on all the public university computers or to download for free at http://www.adobe.com/uk/products/reader.html. The Livescribe Pulse Pen is available for loan from Information Services Media and Sales.

How to do it.

Use the Livescribe Pulse Pen to record the explanation you want to make available. Once you have done this, follow this list of instructions:

  • Plug the USB charging cradle into you computer and dock the pen into it. This will open the Livescribe Desktop.
  • Click on the Pages icon
  • Click on the page/s you wish to export to PDF
  • Right-mouse click on these Pages and select Send Page x to
  • Select Computer ...
  • Select the radio button next to Pages with Audio
  • Press Continue and select a location on the computer to save to

Once the file has been saved it can be used in AberLearn Blackboard, circulated via email etc.
